Proficiency in Survival Craft (STCW)

This course is meant to teach people the necessary procedures for commanding the launch and handling of a survival craft during an emergency evacuation or abandonment.

STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat entails a combination of conceptual and applied experience, with an emphasis on davit launch and recovery.

Anyone who is a navigator or a member of the lifeboat crew on board, including the rescue boat, is eligible.

All seafarers must take the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) course.

Learning Outcomes of Survival Craft Proficiency Training

Students should be able to show the following by the end of the course:

  • Proficiency in using devices such as pyrotechnics and communications
  • Ensure the well-being of those who have survived by administering emergency care.

How is the Survival Craft Proficiency Training Evaluated?

A test will be administered to determine the student’s level of proficiency in Survival Craft Proficiency Training.

Survival Craft Proficiency Training Certifications

After the exam, those who pass the STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat certification will receive their certificate.

The certification is valid for five years after successful completion of the course.

  • Helicopter underwater egress drills

  • Recovery of lifeboats
  • Performance drills in launching, operating and recovery of lifeboats
  • Rescue boat operations

  • Knowledge and Performance evaluations

Duration

The duration of the training is four days.

Lifeboat training, or “Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats” (PSCRB), is designed to prepare crew members in the event of an emergency onboard that necessitates evacuation or rescue of a crew member who has fallen overboard.

This type of training is a mixture of hands-on and theoretical learning, imparting critical skills to individuals who are entrusted with boarding vessels in the event of an emergency.

Prerequisites

Trainees must be at least 16 years old and have had approved or recognized Personal Survival Techniques or comparable instruction before starting training.

Individuals who have not completed the required six months of sea duty may participate in training, but the certificate will not be issued until proof of completion of the required six months of sea service is submitted.
